The Peace Building is set to be the first ever peace museum and education centre in London. It will be a meeting point where all generations can learn about peace builders through history; share stories of peace movements; and remember the countless victims of conflict. It will be a space where we can start to build a global culture of peace. Together.
The style of the building itself will be conducive to the experience of peacefulness; though some of the exhibitions may be challenging, as they’ll speak to the binaries of peace. The internal and external spaces will encourage reflection, communication and connection. The Peace Building will inspire and equip people of all ages to act peacefully in all aspects of their lives; from the individual level (fostering inner peace) and our relationships with others – to streets and communities (including the global community). While we wait for the pandemic to clear the way, and leave a path for global citizens to explore this new landmark in the making; we have developed a series of online events, creative inspiration, and a learning hub to provide a virtual space in which we can all be inspired to lead peaceful lives.
What will the centre offer?
We will work hard to become a centre of excellence in peace education through our learning programmes for schools and colleges – both in the centre and through outreach. The centre will also provide public spaces to reflect, relax and explore… Including a cafe, exhibition space, a reference library, studios, meeting rooms, a space for quiet reflection, and an events space for talks, lectures, conferences and concerts. If you’d like to support the initiators of London’s first ever peace museum & education centre in realising their vision, why not buy a brick?
Mobile amphitheatre seating might be used to create a sculptural addition to the gallery space and provide an informal area for talks and events. An open-plan approach for workshops, seminars, film screenings and lectures will encourage interaction, participation, and a cross-pollination of ideas.
A separate, contained studio space will be designed to support events and activities – including physical and mental wellbeing-based practices. This space will be connected to the building entrance in order to welcome and encourage use of the space by the local community and others.
A resource centre will house the archive material held at the Peace Building. This space will be provide a quiet learning hub. The resource centre will serve as a ‘toolkit’ for peace projects – housing physical archives as well as digital resources and information.
The shop will offer a range of merchandise opportunities; but more importantly serve to extend the resources of the Peace Building and its archive to visitors. The space will be accessible and open-plan, encouraging people to browse, interact and engage with others.
A series of flexible meeting spaces will provide areas for peace-based organisations, visiting groups and professionals to meet and conduct workshops. The spaces will be versatile in order to respond to different group sizes and functions – and will offer a pleasant, calm, non-formal vibe.
The central space of the building will be an open-plan, flexible area – providing an open-plan gallery space at the heart of the building; an open resource for exhibitions that are easily accessible to visitors.
An informal café, with an open-plan aspect to the rest of the building, will provide a warm welcome to the building. Hot-desking, meeting and dining will combine to encourage interaction in a warm and inviting environment.
The space to transform our world…
