Kazuaki Tanahashi - Peace Builder and Artist
Kazuaki Tanahashi known as ‘Kaz’ to many, is a Japanese artist, Zen Buddhist, and peace campaigner. One of the great peace leaders of our time. His art draws on East Asian calligraphy. The first pictogram writing system was created in China about 4000 years ago and then introduced to Japan, Korea and Vietnam. He describes himself as an ambassador for joyful calligraphy. He paints one character at a time – mindfully and also paints a lot of circles. ‘Spiritual practice makes our personality deep and thoughtful.’ Kaz calls the circles ‘the miracle of each moment’. Sometimes the circles are drawn with and by others with huge brushes. He calls his art his gift to the world.
His main concern is to end war and he is very aware and regretful for the Japanese war crimes against China. He works for demilitarisation and has initiated campaigns and organisations for a more peaceful world. This includes: Plutonium Future and World Without Arms. A visionary and peace and spiritual leader. Kaz says: ‘No situation is impossible to change, no one is free of responsibility.’

Poem – From One Candle – Kazuaki Tanahashi
In the darkness of war and violence
spread the light of a peaceful war
From one candle to another,
and to another – to many more…
In the darkness of wrath and hatred
spread the light of loving-kindness,
From one candle to another,
and to another – to many more…
In the darkness of smoke and sorrow
spread the dream of an end to war.
From one candle to another,
and to another – to many more…
From one candle to another,
and to another – to many more…
